Darklight On... Maggie Mundy

Today's Darklight On... is with Maggie Mundy.
Welcome, Maggie!

How did you come to write speculative fiction? What attracted you to the genre?

I loved reading epic fantasies so about ten years ago I decided to write one. The first of a trilogy at 150,000 is still siting on my computer. I then branched into urban fantasy which attracted me because of its blend of magic with the everyday. I would love to write contemporary but I reckon the magic and the chopped up bodies would be trying to get in there.

Are you a plotter? Pantser? Or somewhere in-between?

A plotter, though I have tried to be a pantser but find I need a rough guide. I like to write out a few sentences for each chapter and work from them. This not to say that things have not gone off in a completely different direction.

Do have a favourite of your characters?

Ridge. He is the hero from my urban fantasy Midworlder Lover. He has long hair, is unshaven, drinks whiskey and smokes cigars. Did I mention he is incredibly hot and has wings like an angel? He is not the sort of guy who has never limited himself to one woman until he meets Nicole. The problem is the rules say he can’t have her.

What are you currently working on?

A. 1920’s murder mystery with a supernatural twist and an Australian suspense where a widow discovers her husband wasn’t who she thought he was.

What is your favourite part of the process of writing?

Thinking about the story and suddenly getting that moment when you know it has come together and makes sense.

What can we expect from Maggie Mundy in the future?

A. I am working on a set of erotic vampire novellas based in Australia. Hidden Mortality is coming out in October and is a supernatural thriller based in England. Then I have World Change out next year which is the first in a time travel series.

Who are your favourite authors?

A. Sarah Dunant, who wrote the brilliant The Birth of Venus. Jane Austin, J.R. Ward.

What are you currently reading?

Jennifer Armentrout. Onyx. YA. Kim Hudson. The Virgin's Promise. She presented at the conference. Jennifer Crusie. Trust Me On This.

Do you have a favourite spec fiction movie or TV series?

Firefly. I thought the world Joss Whedon created was excellent. The characters were three dimensional and strong as well as being flawed.

Do you have advice for emerging writers?
Never give up and keep practising and learning. Join groups like RWA and attend conferences if you can. I am lucky to live in South Australia where we have the SARA group. (South Australian Romance Authors) They are a wonderful bunch of supportive writers. Find a critique partner. I have the wonderful Delwyn Jenkins and can’t begin to say how much we have supported each other on our journey.

Out now: Blood Scent

Trent Feldor is a Seeker vampire who protects human females from Rogue vampires who would take them as mates. Kellie is a reporter who wants to make the front page of the Adelaide newspaper by finding the Parklands Killer. Instead she stumbles straight into a vampire fight and she is the trophy being fought for. Kellie has never let anyone into her life since her mother's death, and isn't going to let the mysterious Trent get under her skin. As for Trent, he may have found the one woman he could love but he will have to stop Rogue vampires who want to kidnap her, and vampire hunters who want to kill him.

Coming October 9: Hidden Mortality, Soul Mate Publishing

In Bath in 1850 a witch is murdered in a ritual granting longevity to four men. What they are not aware of is that she has bestowed the same power to another called Seth to avenge her death.

Cara is a descendant of the witch and fills her days with food with her Irish themed catering business. Her nights are another matter; they are full of erotic dreams of a mysterious lover, or nightmares with mutilated bodies. So this wasn’t the best time for her Nana to tell her she is coming into her power.

Of the original four immortals, Vincent is the only one left and to stop his own long life fading he needs another witch to kill. Seth was meant to protect the witch’s descendants from a distance, but with Cara he can’t stay away. He has to make a choice to love Cara, or avenge the original death and possible die himself. Cara has the fight of her life on when one man comes to kill her, and another to love her.

Thanks, Maggie!

Maggie Mundy lives in Adelaide, Australia and is a member of Romance Writers of Australia, and the local chapter SARA (South Australian Romance Authors). She recently completed a Bachelor of Arts in Drama and English at Flinders University. She had a short story published in the RWA Topaz Anthology Little Gems in 2010 called Sea and Vines. Over the past year she has had stories on line with Alfie dog in the UK and Antipodean SF in Australia. She has also performed for many years in corporate entertainment for which she wrote her own sketches, which probably explains why her head is so full of characters. She loves writing romance but thinks falling in love can be scary, especially in her stories where creatures of the night really exist.

You can contact her via her website, Facebook or Twitter.
